Now that summer is here it is so important to use the right sunscreen to protect not only our children, but also ourselves. But how do we know which of the many products is the best one to use? Don't worry the work has been done for you, check out the excellent report on sunscreens at
Environmental Working Group.
Right now we are all worried about the N1H1 virus, more commonly known as the Swine Flu. For parent's of children with DS the decision to vaccinate or not is even more difficult. Our children are high risk, but also at high risk for a serious reaction to the vaccine. Before making your chose talk to as many people as possible. Other parents, and not just your pediatrician, but a doctor who specializes in working with children with Down Syndrome. This is important as a regular pediatrician may not have enough information and knowledge. Every parent has to make their decision on what they feel is best for their child. Once you do the research and consider all the factors, make the decision that seems the best for your child.
Once you have a child with Down Syndrome in your life, you realize just how special these children are. Your life is changed but in such positive ways. This has inspired many parents to start their own charities and organizations to help promote awareness and assist children in any way they can. One of these parents is Andrea Roberts. After her son, Reece, was born she became involved in helping other new parents face the challenges of raising a special needs child. This commitment increased when Andrea became aware of the plight of children with Down syndrome in orphanages throughout the world. These are truly the forgotten children, often living in dismal conditions and spending their short lives in institutions. Andrea began a fund raising organization called Reece's Rainbow, which raises money to help with the high cost of an international adoption. Please take the time to visit the site and possibly help these wonderful children who are waiting for a home. Ironically, there are no shortage of families who would love to adopt these children. However, the costs are what stops many families from their dream of adoption. To see some angel's who desperately need a loving home, go to

Another wonderful site to visit is Life2Orphans. This is a 501(c) registered charity that provides much need supplies to orphanages in the Ukraine. The charity is extremely efficient and well run. All supplies are send to their shipping center in Oregon, to be sent to the individual orphanages in the Ukraine. This ensures that all the boxes clear customs quickly and in tact. Receipts of the boxes are photographed, so that people who donate can be assured that everything arrived and went to the orphans. Many of the orphanages are in extremely poor condition, some with little or no help for the children. Some of the most underfunded are those for the special needs children. The children are extremely undernourished. I was shocked to read it is typical there for formula feeding to stop at 4 months old. The children are then put on a diet of boiled potatoes and sugar water! One orphanage has over 40 bedridden children. These children desperately need donations to pay for high quality food and other basic supplies. They also need toys and bed linens. Please consider donating to this charity. My children and I are busy right now collecting supplies to send to one of the special needs orphanages. They need clothes, shoes, socks, bed linens, towels, and developmental toys for the bed ridden children. To read more about this wonderful organization and see pictures of the children please visit

On a recent trip to the library, my son handed me a book called "What if we do Nothing? Earth's Garbage Crisis." I was so impressed that he would pick up a book about recycling. It also showed me that parents can have a positive influence on their kids. I constantly talk to my kids about Reduce, Reuse, Recycle. If we all make an effort to cut down on the amount of garbage we create, the world will be a better place. Becoming environmentally aware is such an important lesson for all our kids and one that is well received. Take the time to teach your children to respect the earth and help preserve their own future.
In addition to Reduce, Reuse and Recycle, one of the key elements in garbage reduction is to start thinking about what happens to many household items when we are finished with them. One of the biggest problems is with electronics. Most homes are full of electronic appliances, toys and entertainment products. When you are finished with one of these items, search out a responsible recycling company in your area. Make sure that the item will not be sent overseas where many products continue to cause significant environmental damage. Become aware of the idea of Sustainable Consumption. This means only using goods and services that we need to meet our basic needs. In turn, this reduces the use of natural resources, creates less waste and less pollution. It also embodies the concept of sharing resources between rich and poor countries, and acting with concern for the future of our planet and future generations.
There are many great websites to visit with your children to help them get more information about environmental issues. One of the better ones is the Environmental Protection Agency run by the government. This site is fun, yet very informative and filled with great news and ideas for how to be more eco-friendly. Kids can do research to find new ways to conserve resources and reduce their carbon footprint, there are even games to play. To check it out go to
Environmental Kids Club.
