Children and play, its what they do! From their earliest days children learn about their world through play. A baby can lie on their back and kick toys in an activity gym or lie on their tummy and look at themselves in a mirror. Your baby with Down syndrome has everything in common with every other child. They need to learn through play, however, they usually need some extra help. But their are many excellent toys and activities available to entertain and stimulate your child.

Low muscle tone often affects their gross and fine motor skills. Sometimes it may be necessary to offer assistance, such as taking a baby's hand and showing them how to reach for an object. As your child gets a little older visits to the park can provide lots of valuable therapy, as well as being fun for everyone. Climbing works the large muscles and slides are usually a favorite. Slides can be a great motivator to get your child working on stairs. Swings provide vestibular input, but if your child really dislikes the movement, don't force them. It can be a sign of sensory intergration disorder, a complex neurological condition that requires the help of a well trained occupational therapist.

Some children with Down syndrome are very social, whilst others need a lot of coaxing to interact. If your child is shy and tends not to play with other children, a program of facilitated play may be necessary.
